With drive and determination, we are therefore continually on the lookout for innovation, for the best diagnostic and treatment methods, and the latest findings in the field of health and prevention. Latest Covid-19 developments: https://convergence.healthandtechnology.nl/magazine/latest

  • Crisis breeds creativity: In response to a call for help from nurses in northern Italy, a group of students studying for a master’s in Technical Medicine embarked on a project for designing emergency ventilators for Covid-19 patients – in record speed.
  • We\Visit E-Health: helping patients to keep in touch with their families
  • ICU nurses want full control: ICU nurses are working under enormous pressure, and this situation has to change. Artificial intelligence can help in this process.
  • Making a virtue of necessity: One of the effects of the coronavirus crisis has been to disrupt teaching at universities, and to put an abrupt end to student research projects. A number of university faculties clubbed together to devise a brilliant alternative: the Corona Research Super Project.

Research & Education

Erasmus University Medical Center, Erasmus University’s Med School and its university hospitals are all integrated into one campus and led by one executive board. The awardwinning education centre with 40 teaching & lecture rooms for up to 6,000 students was opened in 2012.

  • Research & Innovation: We have consistently been ranked in the world’s top 30 for both clinical medicine and biomedical sciences (US News Clinical Medicine 2019, Nature Index Biomedical Sciences 2019).
The world impact of our research papers in preclinical, clinical & health sciences is 2,35 which is on the top of the world wide ranking list, just below Harvard (2,37). Our overall research aim is to translate bench discoveries to bedside applications and cover all fields from preclinical via clinical to health sciences research. The world impact of our research papers in preclinical, clinical & health sciences is 2,35 which is on the top of the world wide ranking list, just below Harvard (2,37). • Education & Training: Erasmus MC offers BSc, MSc, PhD and Residency programs to train the next generation of medical practitioners and researchers. We are one of the largest European medical schools, with ~2,500 medical students and 220-250 PhD graduations per year. Its medical education is quite exceptional with 33% of the med students having published a paper, 70% having been abroad and 20% choosing for a MD-PhD.  Equally, it expects its PhD students to have 4 or more research publications (within the top 25% journals of their field of research) before admission to the graduation exam. All PhD students have a MSc, MD or DVM upon enrolment and most have an individual scholarship or are paid by a research grant.
  • As a PhD candidate at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), you will be part of a Graduate School and a faculty (school). RDO - Research Development Office

The Research Development Office (RDO) offers a range of funding application-related services for research, innovation and education to promote (inter)national cooperation and financing. We inform and advise Erasmus MC staff in a pro-active manner on both European and (inter)national funding opportunities for research, innovation and education as well as on the development and writing of a successful funding application. In addition, we offer advice to Erasmus MC staff, management and the Board of Directors on external European and (inter)national funding programmes and relations, and facilitate cooperation between Erasmus MC and other organisations.

ACE - Academic Centers of Excellence

To stimulate and facilitate multidisciplinary collaboration outside of the boundaries of the departments, the Erasmus MC board decided to create virtual units called ‘Academic Centers of Excellence’ in 2017. These centers are bottom-up initiatives bringing together researchers, clinicians and educators who jointly work on a specific topic. There is a broad range of ACEs active within Erasmus MC, varying in size and scope. ACEs are led by one or multiple principal coordinator(s), who bring together the involved staff members and discuss their joint focus and activities.

An example of an ACE webinar of the Academic Center of Alzheimer: Man versus Machine: see video. This ACE lecture traces the path of an artificial intelligence radiology application that was originally developed within Erasmus MC as academic tool, but has now found its way to daily clinical practice, enabling individual patient decision-making in dementia and related brain abnormalities.
